Council Roles

He is also a Maldon District Councillor – that link takes you to his entry on the MDC website.

He is on the Council’s Staffing Committee,  the Neighbourhood Development Plan Strategy Group. and assists the Conservation Area Inspection Team.

He is the Website Editor for this website, burnham.info and represents the Town Council on the Community Action Panel, the Coastal Community Team and the  Bradwell Local Community Liaison Council. He is on the Burnham Observatory Working Group and is  advising on the initiative to refurbish the BMX track.

He is leading the Dunkirk Little Ships project, and is a founder and trustee of the Vanguard Restoration Foundation, which aims to restore the Burnham Dunkirk Little Ship Vanguard.

Before becoming a councillor, he was the Chair of the Friends of the Riverside Park, leading on projects such as the creation of the shelters in the park, the BMX track and helping design the Trim Trail that runs throughout the park. He’s also been heavily involved in the organisation of local music events such as the RiverFest.

At the last election Nick stood as an Independent candidate in the South Ward, which is where he lives. Before that, at the by-election in 2017, he stood for the North Ward, because a vacancy had occurred there.


Born in 1958, Nick graduated from the University of Exeter in 1981 with a Ba (Hons) in English.

He then worked s a teacher in the middle-east before entering journalism in Nicosia, Cyprus, where he worked for the Cyprus Mail and help found and edit a leisure magazine, Cyprus Life (now defunct). There he had his first experience in live radio, working for the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation.

He  spent six months in Beirut as a teacher at the American University of Beirut (1983-84) during the height of the Lebansese civil war, from whence he was evacuated by RAF helicopter to Akrotiri in Cyprus following the collapse of the government.

He became a reporter, producer and news editor for IRN, LBC, TV-am, ITN and GMTV (as a news editor for news supplier Reuters TV) before moving into freelance journalism and public relations as an Account Director, his clients including Sony PlayStation and the Design Council.

He now writes books about design, and, currently, Formula One. His latest book, published in July 2018, is a biography about F1 designer, John Barnard, and is entitled The Perfect Car.

He has lived most of his life in Burnham and currently lives on a houseboat that he designed and rebuilt himself, with help from friends as a family home. Father of three grown-up boys, he is also a foster carer.
