Burnham used to have a local police station, but this has now been taken over by the Marine Police, who patrol the river looking, in the main, for drug criminals and defending against possible terrorist attacks.

There are plans for some more Special Constables to patrol the town.

Crime rates in Burnham are relatively low, but there is some (so-called) petty crime – mainly theft, some burglary and some violence, most often committed by people who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

To contact Essex police, call 101, or, of course, in an emergency, 999 or 112.
