Shortly before 11am, a large crowd gathered at Burnham’s War Memorial in the warm sunshine of Sunday 10th November, 2019, to pay tribute to Burnham’s fallen soldiers and those who suffered and died during military conflict and the world wars.
The Reverend Lionel Webber led the moving service, opening with the hymn, ‘O God, our help in Ages Past’. Karen Smiley from the Baptist Church then read The Lesson.
During the Act of Remembrance, the Chairman of the Royal British Legion read the famous verse from Laurence Binyon’s ‘For the Fallen’:
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
The Last Post was then played on the trumpet, followed by a minute’s silence before the Reveille sounded.
There followed The Laying of the Wreaths, and the National Anthem.
