The Broomway is a six-mile, ancient causeway that runs from the Wakering Stairs to Foulness Island, which was once rich farmland but is now a military zone, where munitions are tested – with those past their sell-by date detonated.
The route takes you past the Havengore Bridge at the southern, River Thames, entrance to the River Roach.
It is walkable at low tide but is VERY DANGEROUS – there are quicksands along the way, known locally as the Black Grounds, or the Coffins. The area is very flat and the tide comes in with terrifying rapidity.
The route has claimed at least a hundred lives, making it one of the most dangerous routes in the UK.
If you want to walk it, you need a guide.
