St Peter’s-on-the-Wall was built in 654 AD on the western wall of an old Roman fort, the chapel of St Peter’s-on-the-Wall overlooks the Essex marshes fringing the North Sea and is one of Britain’s oldest churches.
It is a contemplative and spiritual place, well worth a visit – but you have to walk half a mile over dirt track to get to it, having driven to the gate on the eastern outskirts of the charming village of Bradwell-on-Sea, also known as Bradwell-juxta-mare, a name reflective of its Roman history.
